Why Prophecy Boards?
I made the “Prophetic Prototype” series for fun. The prototypes allowed me to experiment and break away from the more serious series while still using the same themes as Religious Wars and Myths. “Ouija Boards” have a strange history, mythology and reputation. I’ve read theories claiming prophecy boards originated in ancient China or were first created by Pythagoras. I’ve read many more theories claiming Ouija boards, or "witch boards", are linked to sin and blasphemy because they are objects of the occult. Creating my own Prophecy Boards falls in naturally with the themes of my work.
Aside from this common thread, I also wanted to indulge my friends. I wanted to experiment with some of the artistic styles my friends had asked me to work with, mainly Art Nouveau. In many ways I’ve thought of the Prototypes as very elaborate show flyers for a band whose name is the entire alphabet.
The boards are PROTOTYPES and are meant for display only. Use them at your own risk! They are NOT made to be used with a planchette scraping across the layers of paint. Using them will eventually ruin them. After the Herrell's show I will choose the most popular board to reproduce as a useable prophecy board. Check back for updates on when the chosen board will be available. The plan is to have the reproduced board ready for the holidays (08).
