About the painting: Let Them Eat Oil is a play on the famous phrase never spoken by Marie Antoinette, Let Them Eat Cake. For this reason, my Marie Antoinette has a cupcake tattoo that mimics her famous pouf hairstyle. The tank atop her hair stands in for the ship in her famous La Belle Poule hairstyle, which she (or another woman) smugly wore upon winning a battle against the English Arethusa.
The oil pumps should be obvious, as well as the color palette, which impersonates sunset. Broken Zillij tiles are fraught with bombs and a traditional Islamic star stands in for a halo, severing her head from the rest of the painting. The Islamic crescent moon and star is worn frivolously in her hair, but due to its placement, dominates her. Other aspects of the painting include more symbolism and careful design that I do not care to disclose.
Let us not forget that Antoinette was the Queen of Deficit and excess, putting her selfishness ahead of the needs of the people and using her power carelessly. In the end her actions spurred the French Revolution and she was sent to the guillotine. Viva la Revolucion!
